Thank you for your interest in participating in our study looking at how autistic adolescents interact in social situations, with a particular focus on social camouflaging.<\/p>\n

Social camouflaging refers to a type of social coping strategies used to hide autistic traits to present oneself in a way that meets neurotypical social expectations – this is commonly also referred to as “Masking” in popular media.<\/p>\n

Social camouflaging can look different across situations and has its benefits and drawbacks, depending on the person. Most of what is known about social camouflaging comes from adults, with emerging information from youth. This study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of how social camouflaging affects the well-being of autistic teens, as well as how social camouflaging is related to one’s cognitive functioning including executive function, attention, and theory of mind.<\/p>\n

While early research has shown similar trends concerning mental health in autistic adolescents as <\/span>adults who socially camouflage (including depression, anxiety, and stress), many adolescents <\/span>may only be beginning to socially camouflage given the stage in their development. As a result, <\/span>adolescents may be experiencing earlier signs of the mental health problems experienced by <\/span>those who socially camouflage in adulthood. Moreover, past research on the relationship <\/span>between cognition and social camouflaging in adolescents has looked more generally at <\/span>executive functioning, which may have missed more nuanced associations between specific <\/span>executive function areas and social camouflaging. Lastly, past research on social camouflaging <\/span>in autistic adolescents has not captured camouflaging behaviour in the natural environment of the <\/span>everyday life of an adolescent. Important factors may exist in the specific moments where <\/span>camouflaging occurs that might affect both mental health and cognitive outcomes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Through this work, we hope to gain a deeper understanding of social camouflaging behaviours in both self-identified autistic adolescents and formally diagnosed autistic adolescents, the relationship between cognition and social camouflaging, and the relationship between autistic burnout and stress (early predictors of other mental health issues) and social camouflaging in adolescence.<\/p>\n

Studying social camouflaging is important for autism spectrum research as the consequences of this phenomenon have been shown to affect the quality of life of autistic people, and little is known about how it impacts the adolescent population.<\/p>\n

Who can Participate?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are looking for neurotypical, formally diagnosed autistic (proof of documentation not required), and self-identified autistic teenagers who:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Are 15 -18 years old<\/li>\n
  • Able to attend one in-person session at the University of Victoria campus<\/li>\n
  • Have access to a smartphone or tablet<\/li>\n
  • Have functional language and no intellectual disability*<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    *Due to the nature of social camouflaging, we require participants to have functional language and no intellectual disability, regardless of their support needs.<\/em><\/p>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    What does Participation involve?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    One 3-3.5-hour lab visit at the University of Victoria, where you will be asked to complete questionnaires, thinking tasks, and hair sampling. You will also wear a special cap that measures your brain activity.<\/p>\n

    Completing daily surveys on your smartphone or tablet every day for one week<\/p>\n

    Your parent\/caregiver\/guardian will be required to complete a short online survey about your behaviours.<\/p>\n

    Contribute to science! Help us improve our understanding of autism and develop better ways to support autistic people<\/p>\n

    As a thank-you for their time, participants will receive up to $100 for youth and $40 for their parents\/guardians in e-gift cards of their choice.<\/p>\n
